It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!!!
It’s been a while since i’ve updated this post. A few things have been going on;
After four weeks of (im)patiently waiting, our household effects finally arrived! It felt like Christmas. At one point I had almost given up hope of it actually arriving. Everytime we called the moving company it was a different answer. Initially it was supposed to arrive with our barge order in October. Then it was going to be driven to Thompson and then flown here. Once when we contacted the airline, they said that they don’t break up the shipment (without the clients approval) and they weren’t sure if/when they would have a plane with enough weight allowance to fly it. So we gave them the go-ahead to break up the shipment. We were told that it should start arriving the next day. Well, the next day it didn’t arrive. After talking to the airline again we were told that it would arrive on the freighter the next day. Finally….all of it arrived the next day. Unbelievably it all arrived together and nothing was broken! I was very pleasantly surprised. After unpacking we did discover a few things didn’t make the move, instead they went into storage. We have contacted the moving company and apparently they are going to pull it out of the warehouse and ship it to us. We’ll see how long that will take. Below are a couple of pictures from the day our stuff arrived.

All of our boxes arrived finally!

The dog seems to love the camera!

Starting to unpack
One thing that I like about this place is that there is quite a bit of storage. Some of it is practical to use all the time, some of it, not so much. This storage area is located above the stairs. It is a great place for us to store empty boxes that we want to keep, but want out of the way. We also have Christmas decorations, suitcases, storage tubs, etc, stored up there. It is definitely not somewhere that I want to get into all the time!

Climbing into the storage area.....

Over the last couple of days I have noticed snowflakes in the air. Nothing significant, but you can see them when you are outside. Today we have had strong winds and with them, snow! I knew it was coming as other areas farther north have already had a significant amount. So far nothing has stuck, but i’m sure it’s just around the corner. I tried to take a picture to show it, but it just doesn’t do it justice.

Snow this morning
Our Aerogarden is doing ok. The Basil is growing like crazy. The Thyme, Oregano and Mint are slowly starting to grow. Our Dill hasn’t sprouted at all and our Chives started to sprout but they seemed to have “leaped” out of the soil. I called the 1-800 customer service center today and they are sending me a replacement pack for free! How is that for customer service? Apparently they normally send the pod that didn’t sprout, but I guess Canada won’t allow them to ship the pods individually. We’re getting all 6 pods sent to us for free. I have to say that I am quite impressed with their service.

Hi, from one of the “strangers” reading your blog…I love how you both have adjusted to the different life up North, and I hope to experience your time there through this blog! BTW, the Aerogarden is amazing!

I can’t believe you made it into that crawlspace up top! Everyone talks about it but nobody here has ever got up there to find out what was up there. Most likely because we don’t have a big ladder but still! I could really use that storage space….

Fresh bananas and pineapple — impressive. Good thing you thought to pack the ladder! The basil looks really healthy.

We have actually been really lucky with fresh fruit. We haven’t gotten anything through foodmail that wasn’t good. Pineapple, cantaloupe, oranges, bananas, strawberries, grapefruit. We’ve even been able to buy grapes, apples, pears and peaches locally. I imagine this will change as winter sets in, but we’re enjoying it while we have it!
We actually borrowed the ladder from the detachment. I was just happy that we had access to one that was long enough.
