Today we had our first experience with “northern” internet. You are only allowed to use so much bandwith depending on which package you have. Well apparently we went over this and were downgraded to “dial-up”…That was painful….We have upgraded our package and hopefully won’t have to deal with that again! I don’t even want to think of how long it would have taken me to download all the pictures!!

The Inukshuk is unusual or different from what we are used to seeing. Is your house a semi-detached? What level of schooling is the arctic college? Funny there are fans in the church. We don’t even have that here.

Yes, our place is a semi-detached. Not too sure about the Arctic College. Etienne doesn’t believe that there are any courses being held right now…But he could be wrong?!?!

Inushuks come in all shapes and sizes, they don’t always look like ‘people’.
I’m jealous that your house is a pretty blue, same house though. And your detachment looks very new. Our detachment… well, it’s UGLY! It looks like a really big mobile home and is dark brown and yellow stipes.
The town looks pretty. Very flat from the looks of things.

The town looks very …industrial. I never see any people around town in the pictures!

lol….I guess it was the time of day because in the evening there are people all over town!!

Great pictures! Is it always windy there?
September 7th, 2009 at 08:11
So far there always seems to be a wind of some sort….

great pics!! i’m guessing going to the airport must be pretty easy? no huge lines/crazy security, u could probably get up 1/2 beforehand and walk over there? don’t have to worry about parking? lol

How about no security at all. All the airports in the north are unsecured. We heard that even Yellowknife is unsecured…. but that’s unconfirmed.

@Etienne
When I was there (10 years ago), Yellowknife was unsecure if you headed north. However, you had to go through security if heading south

We loved Ben’s shop when we were there – it was the only place to get slurpies before the co-op started selling them! And as for Yellowknife airport – if you are flying from the south to a northern community you don’t go through security, but if you are flying from the north to the south you do go through security.

Great pictures! I’m almost convinced to but Chesterfield Inlet on my “someday list” (got to love being a Northern teacher who is always on the move).
Yellowknife I think has about the same amount of security as Iqaluit, which is about the same for here in Whitehorse. Very minimal. I know in Nunavut, the only time I ever had to go through security is when I was flying down to Ottawa / Montreal / Winnipeg. But flights between communities, no security check.
Oh yes, Nothern Internet – how I don’t miss Qiniq. I always went over my limit and always wound up dishing out the 30$ per extra GB. Good Luck! There has been many posts regarding internet in Nunavut by many of us bloggers. You pain is well shared.

September 10th, 2009 at 07:13
Not yet, I’m still waiting for all my stuff. We’ve been living out of 6 suitcases since we got here… Guitar hero didn’t make the cut to be packed in the suitcases!!
