So it was a secret but there was a contest for who would be the person to write the 200th comment on our blog. This milestone was reached this Halloween night by Darlie. Congratulations Darlie!! Your prize will go out in the mail as soon as you email us at contests(at)thearcticpost.ca with your mailing address.

For everyone else’s knowledge, there will be another prize for the 300th comment and maybe for other occasions too ;-)

Northern Medicine

Etienne and I were talking today and he was saying that lately I’ve seemed angry and unhappy. This really made me take a time out and really think about how I’ve been feeling lately. Once I took a second and really thought about it, I realized that I have felt a little “unsettled” Overall I love it here and feel “settled” in our home. I am welcoming this time to de-stress from the crazy life we were living in the south. It felt that one of us was always on the go. Driving here and there to do this and that. We had been renovating the house we were living in for the past year. We both worked shift work and it seemed that we rarely had days off. Sometimes we saw each other more in passing at work than we did at home. When we did actually have a day off together there was always a long list of things that we needed to do. Once we got word that we were moving up here, it only became more hectic. Trying to organize our lives, say good-bye to the south and prepare for the north.

All ready for winter…

October 24th, 2009 Carly 8 comments

Well the dog is anyways. We moved from northern Alberta which would have temperatures as low as -40ÂșC. I know these temperatures will be nothing compared to what we will experience here, so we figured we should buy some winter wear for our dog as well. Read more…

Something I need to get off my chest…

I don’t know if it’s just me, but lately i’ve been experiencing how uneducated the world (mostly Canada) is to the north!! I have had a number of issues trying to enter my address. The most recent being today. I am using iPhoto and tried to enter “NU” into the shipping province. Well, it tells me that it is not a valid abbreviation?? I have seen this multiple times. Either the abbreviation is incorrect, or the spelling of Nunavut it wrong altogether.

A Fun Night out!

October 18th, 2009 Carly 4 comments

This past week was Co-Op Week here in town. To end the week the managers put on a “Games night” in the Hamlet Gym. Before the games, the locals did a Feast. It started at 5 but we didn’t end up heading there until 6. Needless to say we were late and missed the entire thing. That was disappointing, but there will be more to come. So no pictures of that this time…..sorry. Read more…

What have we been up to?

October 14th, 2009 Carly 11 comments

I wish I had something exciting to write here. The truth is, I don’t. We’ve started to settle nicely into a routine. It’s starting to get cold, so there isn’t much to do right now. We’re still waiting for the snow to finally stay around and then we can start going out on the snow machines. Until then we’re at a standstill, unless something exciting happens in the community.

I’ve been sitting here for days trying to decide what my next post is going to be about. Up until now there’s been lots of new and exciting things going on here. Just as everything else, things just don’t seem “new and exciting” anymore. I’ve been reading quite a few northern blogs recently and they have said some really key things. Posts don’t have to be exciting. Something that now seems day to day to us, doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing to our friends and family down south. That was the #1 reason we started this post. Allow loved ones an ability to take a peek into northern life. Don’t get me wrong, we are still loving it here and are learning new things everyday. It’s just hard trying to find something of substance to write about. This post is going to be some of the day to day life we are experiencing up here.

Dishes and liquor….

October 8th, 2009 Carly 8 comments

The north is a little different than the south regarding alcohol. I don’t know how it works for all communities, but i’m guessing it’s probably the same as it is here in Chesterfield. Read more…
