All ready for winter…
Well the dog is anyways. We moved from northern Alberta which would have temperatures as low as -40ºC. I know these temperatures will be nothing compared to what we will experience here, so we figured we should buy some winter wear for our dog as well.
We went online and found a website Neopaws that sold neoprene booties and coats. We had a great experience with them. We measured our dog, entered the information and ordered them. The next day the company contacted us saying that according to the size we recorded for our dogs paws, we required a bigger size for her front paws. So they changed the order and sent them to us. We ordered them on the 19th of October, they shipped on the 20th and we received them on the 23rd! I can’t believe it only took 3 days. It is a canada based company, from Toronto. Needless to say we will be ordering from them again.
Yesterday when we received the items, we put them on our dog. Lets just say that she is going to need some time to get used to it. She was not happy. She walked directly to her bed and wouldn’t move. She was so stressed that she actually started to drool! I tried to get her to walk outside, well we got her down the stairs and then she just stood there. I’m hoping when the cold weather comes she’ll learn to accept them. Time will tell.

Love the doggie gear. When we took our (mostly housedog) old english sheepdog to Nunavut we ended in Iqaluit in January and it was a very cold January that year. I had made sheepskin booties for him but he did NOT like them so out we went. After the first few days of him trying to walk without actually having his paws touch the -40C ground he finally agreed that the booties were okay.

My Lab, George, would hate me if I tried to put those on him. But Indigo is right. When it’s that cold, one trip outside without them, and Cisco will suddenly love them.

Haha! Tank wouldn’t wear his coat and the boots I got for him… they’ve never even made it on his feet. He actually does really well in the cold which surprised us. We just don’t keep him out very long.

I’m not sure what it will be like in Chesterfield Inlet, but here it gets no colder than the Prairies. Its just colder a lot longer. We expect -30 temps from November to March, with a month of really cold weather after the sun returns. Really cold is temps in the low -30s with about a week foray into the 40s.

So very adorable! My husband and I bought booties for our dogs when we moved up here, and well lets just say they went on once, and by the time we made it down the steps all 8 of them were off. I had one dog do the “freeze” and didn’t move an inch..so hauling him down the steps was a chore. The second dog did the “kick & squirm” and by the time we made it to the bottom she was bootless. The boots never did make it back on their feet. We decided it wasn’ t worth the stress when “going for a walk” was a good happy time. When it hits -40/50 they dogs only want to be out long enough to “do their business” as soon as their paws get cold they are wanting back to the house.
Hope you have better luck with the booties than we did.

the above comments are right…my dog is very stubborn and there was no WAY she was going to let me put clothes on her until i took her outside a few times. she still doesn’t like the whole clothing deal (au natural seems to be a better fit for her), but she stays warm in the cold.
ok, ok…i know my dog is smaller…but -30 for a chihuahua’s pee run is pretty much as comfortable as something you would get for a lab’s -50. no?

I got Jack to wear his booties – no problem. This is what you need to do. Make sure YOU are totally ready to walk out the door. Then put the boots on the dog & run outside. If they don’t have time to think about it they usually don’t make a fuss. Jack won’t move if he is in the house with his boots on, but open the door & look out!! Mind you, I think my dog is sort of wierd. He didn’t mind wearing his halloween costume…
