Dishes and liquor….

The north is a little different than the south regarding alcohol. I don’t know how it works for all communities, but i’m guessing it’s probably the same as it is here in Chesterfield.

In order to purchase alcohol you have to apply for it. Your application then goes to the committee and they decide whether or not you are allowed to purchase. There is a limit on the amount you can purchase per week. We have ordered a couple bottles in the past and realized that we ordered 2 bottles of red instead of 1 red and 1 white. So I ordered a bottle of white last week. This is where we discovered that we paid the same amount of shipping for 1 bottle that we did for 3!! So we paid $30 for shipping. We ended up paying more for shipping than we did for the wine!!! Good thing we aren’t drinkers….lol..Oh well, next time we’ll make sure we need a few things before we order.

Here is a picture of our $50 bottle of wine….A lot considering we only use it for cooking!!

The other night we had a couple people over for dinner. Etienne was fantastic and helped me cook/bake all day!! We made homemade pasta, baguette which we made into Garlic Bread, and Etienne made the cake from scratch all by himself. We both really enjoy cooking, but that’s where it ends for Etienne. He HATES doing dishes. I’ve just come to accept this and don’t ask him to help me. Like he always says, he’d rather clean a toilet than dishes! I don’t get it, but what can you do? I ended up burning my hand (not something I do often, but when I do, I do it well!) By the end of the night I already had a blister on my thumb. We all know what this means…..I couldn’t stick my hand in water that is warmer than cold! There were a lot of dishes and no way we could leave them. So, I told Etienne he was going to have to do dishes! He wasn’t happy, but he did do them. I had to snap a few pictures to prove that it actually happened.  He is not going to be pleased that I wrote this, I thought it was entertaining…Love you honey!! :)

That’s not the way he was brought up. He’s just lazy! Make sure he washes the toilet then!

I get the feeling shipping gets you on everything. The guy at the post office told me it is the second most expensive place to ship to in Canada. I imagine Grise Fjord is the most expensive!

What’s estimated date of arrival for the barge order?

Shipping isn’t actually too bad. You just have to really shop around on sites. Some places offer free shipping (believe it or not). We ordered a shelving unit from Costco that weighed over 50lbs and they shipped for free!! So it all depends on where you’re ordering from.

Ahh..the infamous barge order. Apparently it’s in Coral Harbor right now, but it has to go back to Churchill and then it’ll come our way. They’re estimating end of October….

Let’s hope the river hasn’t frozen by then. I imagine they have ice breakers that are useful before it is totally frozen.

Yes, normally the coast guard will travel and break the ice if needed. We should be fine. We’re south enough that we shouldn’t have to worry about that much ice quite yet.

I imagine that in two years when you leave you will have to wait to receive you things down south until the barge goes to pick them up. Other than the quad what else would you have to ship by barge?

How I wish I could spend $30.00 dollars for a bottle of wine. Kugaaruk is a dry community which means “No” alcohol whatsoever.

Nick and I just did our first liquor order and it cost over $200 for 24 beer and 12 coolers. Nick was really craving a Keiths though so he figures it was worth it. However I doubt we’ll do it again any time soon.

I’ve heard that for cooking you can use apple juice instead of white wine. I never tried it but it is probably a bit sweeter.
