He lived to tell the tale!!

On Tuesday Chesterfield Inlet Development Corporation (CIDC) held a feast and prizes for their 10 year anniversary. They had a tonne of food there. Both “regular” food and “country food”. The regular food included: turkey, ham, macaroni salad, buns, etc. Country meat is an assortment of frozen(raw) and “cached”

Cached food is meat that is left out on the land, covered with rocks and wire (to keep animals from eating it) and left for a period of time to “age”.

The Country meat there included: Beluga, Caribou, Arctic Char, Narwhal and Walrus. Country meat is brought in and spread over cardboard that is laid on the floor.

Most of the evening we politely turned down offers of food. Eventually Etienne went to sit with one of the locals that was eating some of the country meat. She actually convinced him to try a little piece of frozen raw caribou. He said it wasn’t too bad and that it tasted like beef carpaccio.

Overall the evening was a lot of fun. They gave out tickets at the beginning of the night for the prizes that were drawn at the end. I can’t believe the prizes they gave away. 2 flat screen 32″ TV’s, Dell laptop, portable water tanks, fishnets, fabric, portable infrared heater by suncloud. They ended up with so much pop and desserts leftover that they actually started drawing for them as well. From the numbers on the tickets we figured there were about 250 people. That is huge considering there are only 350 people in the entire community.

The gym is almost full. Everyone lining up for food!

I’m glad you enjoyed it but our dinner tonight at Renoir was a lot more appetizing to look at. I can’t believe Etienne, with his super delicate stomach, ate country food.

Hmm I don’t know if I could eat meat off cardboard that has been siting on the floor of the community gym. Imagine what was on it. All the hairballs floating across the floor. No thanks.
