Life Adventures in the Canadian Arctic

Ahh, there you are!

We received a phone call this afternoon that there were a few caribou out by the community freezer. I grabbed our binoculars and went out the back door to have a look. Sure enough, I was able to see a couple walking around. They didn’t stay in view very long. By the time Etienne got outside they were gone. Oh well, better luck next time.

Shortly there after we received a phone call inviting us to go out on the land. A few of us went out to find some Caribou. This time we were successful! The other people that we went with were there to hunt them. I have never been a fan of hunting, and couldn’t even stand to listen to people talk about it. I knew that I was going to be exposed to it up here. I came here with an open mind and am willing to experience as much of Northern Life I can while we’re here. It truly is a way of life up here. Most of the people here depend on hunting for food, clothing, etc.  I wish this is where I could sit and talk about the wonderful adventure of hunting, but it’s not. This is where I admit that I truly am a city girl through and through. I am glad that I went, and can say that I’ve experienced it, but I don’t think it is going to become my new hobby. All the power to those that enjoy it. I thought I was mentally prepared when we got closer to the caribou, but lets just say a few tears were shed, and leave it at that! We don’t need to go into gory details.

A few of what we saw

Great photos. I couldn’t hunt or watch a hunt either. City girl or country girl — it just isn’t in me.

I hate hunting with a passion too but living up here does change your thoughts on that a little. I still don’t have any time for hunting deer and all that down south. That’s for sport and most don’t even really hunt since they throw out apples and stuff to attract them. I know in the north every part of the animal that can be used will be and to me that makes it ok. But I’ll never understand the thrill of taking something’s life and watching it die. Good for you on the tears, I’d be bawling right along side of you.
