What a weekend!!
This was my last weekend before I head down south for the next 9 weeks. I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.
On Saturday I was invited to go to a shower in town. I’ve never been to one here, so I didn’t know what to expect. It was pretty much the same as any shower I have been to before. A lot of great food, gifts and games. The only difference were some of the games we played. They were similar to what we’ve seen before. The first one we all sat in a circle and rolled dice. When you rolled the preselected number, you started to put elastics on your wrist, you kept doing it until someone else rolled the determined number. I call beginners luck because I won the first game! Totally not expected. The next game was the same process in rolling the dice, however this time there was a bowl that had numbers taped onto the outside and when you rolled the correct number you started pulling the number off in numerical order. The person to pull the last number off won. I did not win at this one. The next game was again the same idea with dice, however you pulled pages out of a phone book (this time we used an old textbook). Once all the pages were pulled out, the one with the preselected page won. The last game that I had never seen before. You were blindfolded and had to transfer cotton from one bowl to another with a wooden spoon. The cotton is so light that you have no idea if you even have anything on the spoon. I really had a great time. It was so good to get out of the house and meet some new people.
Today a bunch of us went out on the land. A few of them went to hunt for Caribou. I know, I can’t believe I went out again but I am very thankful that I did. It was such an awesome day. It didn’t take long before we found a few caribou. They shot 3 in total. Not too bad. I didn’t actually watch them shoot them, but I did watch them carve them. Once they got all the caribou in the same area, they started skinning them. Mike had never done it before, so he decided to lend a hand. Neither Etienne or I were interested in actively participating. We were quite content hanging out and socializing with everyone. The weather was awesome.
I have added a few pictures. Yes, one of them is of a dead caribou. If you would rather not see it, it’s at the bottom of the page, so don’t look any further than the Caribou hoof picture
The first two pictures are of a few of the caribou we saw today.
The following picture is of our “Special” friend. This picture is of his very first experience with snow. As you can see he’s having a very difficult time walking. lol. I’m just kidding Mike….you know we love you!! The snow was really deep where we stopped, so there was some difficulty walking around. Mike was just the poor unfortunate soul that had the first experience in the deep snow. It’s a good thing we had our camera handy. A video would have been way funnier!!
The next two photos are of a caribou hoof and Mike helping with the carving of the Caribou.

How DEEP is that snow??

I always thought caribou travelled in bigger groups. What do they eat all winter long? Does the meat taste like deer?
Is Mike holding the hoof for moral support? Is he saying “it’s okay buddy, you’re in a better place now”. Maybe its just the skin he’s holding now that I look at it. Anyway not nearly as bad as the whale pictures.

Love the shot with the snow mobile. And the hoof is cool too. Have a good time down south and hope you keep blogging!

This seems like you are having quite the experience Carly. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to visit on time out.
