My new footwear

Etienne and I were talking a while ago about how nice it would be to have a pair of Kamiks.  The only unfortunate side is a brand new pair is quite expensive. There is a big process to make them. IE – They still “chew” the seal skin to soften it. You can only wear them when there’s snow on the ground, so I would be really limited to the amount I can actually wear them. Since they aren’t tanned, they need to be kept frozen. So, when you’re not wearing them, they need to be kept in the freezer. I wouldn’t have as much opportunity to wear them once we are living back down south. Since they need to be kept frozen, I won’t even be able to “display” them in our home. We don’t know exactly how long we will be up here, so I hate to have something that I don’t get to enjoy for long.

All that aside, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to have a pair when I was offered a second hand pair by a lady in town!  They initially had a white trim on the top, but the lady I bought them from said she would change it to black for me. So I had to say yes! They were really nice and as soon as I saw them, I knew that I wanted them. So I phoned Etienne and we decided to buy them. They didn’t have a pair of duffle socks with them, so I knew i’d have to make myself a pair. A friend from town gave me some of the extra material she had so I could make my own pair. I am really looking forward to learning how to make them. I know a couple of people in town that can help me, so hopefully soon I will have them made!  A couple days ago, the lady dropped off my pair and they look really good. The black trim makes a huge difference. She also surprised me and brought a pair of duffel socks that I could buy. It’s nice to be able to wear them now, instead of after I have made myself a pair.

Kamiks with the Duffel socks.

Cisco loves the smell!!

What would Paul McCartney think? Wearing the seals on your feet. Aren’t they cold when you put your feet in them seeing as you took them out of the freezer to wear them?

What is the goldish part around the bottom? Is that the permanent heel or is that just something you slip over?

    Etienne says:

That’s the seal skin. The top part is the caribou. It does look like it’s goldish colored but it really isn’t.

The bottom looks like plastic what is it made of. If I keep following Mike’s comments maybe I will be the 600 sooner rather than later. Just kidding Mike.

They are beautiful Carly! Hope you get to wear them a few times before spring arrives for you. Nothing worse than getting something really cool and then you can’t use it because it is the wrong season.

I forgot to ask, how warm are they when you have them on in the house? Will you be able to wear them when you go sledding in the middle of winter?

You know all the times I flew up north I never saw anyone were a pair of those. With the snow down here now I wish I had a pair.
